A Way to Protect
His Investment
without Giving Away the Store
A friend of mine, retired,
restless and eager to do something useful, came
up with an idea to open a small store in the
downtown business district of his community.
His specialty is leather goods.
My friend, Jim,
had traveled a lot during his business career
and during those travels had befriended a man in
Taiwan who was in the leather goods business.
They hit it off and Jim and his Taiwan friend
met up for dinner every time Jim was in that
country, which was fairly often.
During one of
their dinners, Jim’s friend made the offer to
supply him with a nice line of leather goods if
he ever had the hankering to go into retail
sales in the U.S. While appreciating the offer,
Jim never dreamed he would take advantage of it.
Things change.
Jim remembered that offer and had kept in touch
with his friend in Taiwan and decided to give
the leather goods business a try. So he went
through the myriad of details that are involved
in going into business, which are many and
complex, not to mention costly.
During that
whole process, Jim was advised along the way to
consider a good security system for his store.
“Leather goods area attractive items to
burglars,” he was told. “They can easily be
resold on street corners at steep discounts.”
While Jim
believed the advice, paying for a security
system for his store wasn’t in his start-up
budget. Once things got rolling, he would
consider adding such a system. This was Jim’s
first big mistake as a retailer.
Just weeks into
his new business venture, Jim’s store was broken
into one night and a good portion of his best
merchandise was taken. “They seemed to know
what sells on the street,” the investigating
policeman observed. Indeed they must have, Jim
realized, grimly, pondering his big loss. Yes,
insurance would cover a fair amount of the loss,
but it would also cause his insurance to rise.
Not to mention the lost time he would suffer in
re-stocking his store.
“What I need is
a good security system that I can afford,” Jim
told his wife. “But does such a thing exist?”
His wife suggested that he check with the local
merchant group that he joined, which could have
learned of a low-cost way to protect his store.
It was a great suggestion.
The merchant
group had heard of a reasonable option from one
of its members. It is called autodialer, Jim
was told. It is low-priced and doesn’t involve
covering an entire store with expensive wiring
and installing high-priced equipment. Jim was
told to check it out at
www.yoursecurityandsafety.com/autodialer.htm.
Jim did check
it out and found that the device was a unique
infrared system that monitors an area selected
by the user. When armed, the motion detector
keeps watch over that area and, should movement
be detected, sends a security alarm and sets an
autodialer into motion. The autodialer will
call up to 5 preset telephone numbers, such as
Jim’s home, the local police and others.
During the
daytime, you can utilize the autodialer as an
alert device to let you know when someone has
entered the store. In this mode, it will sound
a chime when motion is detected.
At under $40
apiece, Jim decided he could afford two or three
autodialers, to be placed in different positions
in the store. If vandals decided to break into
his store again, Jim told his wife, they won’t
have the time to do any selection of the best
merchandise. They would have just enough time
to flee, it that.
And Jim had
found a reliable method of protecting his
investment without “giving away the store.”
